Sorry I've been MIA on this blog! Things have been hectic, so hopefully, eventually, I'll get around to updating! :) It's a long standing promise, eh?
Quick question to parents out there... did your pediatrician ever recommend "Nursery Water" for your babies? Ours did for Jocelyn. So, as dutiful parents, we went out and got Nursery Water for her. I use it in making her food, for her to drink, etc. The fluoride is supposed to help "prevent" cavities.
Well, today, let's just say I, in serendipity, discovered a chemical reaction that lead me on a bunny trail to discover some truths behind "fluoride" water. I usually use regular water to cook with, but for some weird inclination, I decided to try to use "fluoride" water to bake some butternut squash. I covered it with aluminum foil, and baked in the oven for an hour at 400 degrees.
When my butternut squash was done, I took it out of the oven. Voila my beautiful butternut squash, right?! Wrong!! Covered all over my baked butternut squash were speckles of white dots. WHITE DOTS. Perfectly rounded, 1-2 mm white dots. I promise you they were not there before and my butternut squash is fresh.
My first inclination (perhaps my pharmacist-bent paranoia)... is that it must be a chemical reaction! The fluoride in the water reacted with the aluminum foil that was covering my baking dish. I googled "Fluoride, Aluminum" and confirmed my suspicion that I had actually inadvertently created Aluminum Fluoride, which is really a toxin!
That lead me to research "Nursery Water" and it's so called benefits of added fluoride. I came across this article: http://www.thebostonchannel.com/health/10663748/detail.html
There are a bunch of other websites out there that caution the use of fluoride in small young children. Undoubtedly, fluoride in adults & older children help prevent cavities. But for babies? Really? For toddlers? Hmmm....
Just wanted to pass along the information to fellow moms out there! Let me know what you think or what you find out.

Thanks for doing the research for me. I am too cheap to ever buy special water even if my ped suggests it. haha. He drinks water from the Brita now.
Hmmm... Very interesting!!! I would be cautious about eating anything with huge white spots on it!?!??? That's crazy!!!!!!! Yikes!!!! And Yuckkkkk!!!!! Anyways, our doctor has never recommended "nursery water" to us. I don't know much about it, but I remember seeing it at the store to be used to make infant formula? Most of us (that is, parents with toddlers/infants) are told to use fluoride-free toothpaste so it is safe to swallow since they are not able to spit/rinse the toothpaster out. The reason adults have fluoride in their toothpaste is - yes, because supposedly it has been shown to prevent tooth decay - but not to be swallowed and ingested!!!!!! YIKES!!! I'm sure that toddlers use fluoride free toothpaste for a reason!!!! I'm no doctor or scientist - but those two pieces of information make sense to me - don't ingest fluoride (at least in "massive/toxic" amounts! I'm curious to what the fluoride content is in our regular tap water. My guess that there probably is a tiny amount in there and probably a level tha is closely watched. Anyways, those are just my thoughts... Is water in your area different than ours? That might be a reason also?? Doctors, pediatricians, and others - please comment!! Yikes!!!
